Elements and Compounds: Ingredients of Matter answers the question, “What is matter made of?” Students learn that atoms are the smallest building blocks of all substances and that the types of atoms in matter determine its unique properties. Students find out that elements are substances that contain only one kind of atom, and they discover how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table. Students also discover that different kinds of elements combine during chemical reactions to form compounds such as water and salt. At the end of each two-page spread, a brief statement called The Bottom Line reinforces students’ understanding by summing up the key ideas about elements and compounds covered in those pages.
