Physical Properties of Matter: Matter’s What, How, and Why introduces students to the big idea that everything is made of matter. Students learn that atoms are the building blocks of matter and that there are just 92 naturally occurring types of atoms. Students discover how these atoms combine in different ways to form all the matter in the Universe. They learn that each kind of matter has different properties, and they investigate some of these properties, including density, weight, melting and boiling points, and conductivity. At the end of each two-page spread, a brief statement called The Bottom Line reinforces students’ understanding by summing up the key ideas about matter covered in those pages.
